About This Activity
In Chain Reaction Life Size teams work together to create a complex contraption. Each each team creates a device that performs a simple task and links it to the next team's device to produce a domino effect in which activating one device triggers the next device in sequence. Teams must test and rework their device to ensure it will function properly. They then collaborate with the next team to ensure that there is perfect flow between their machine and the next. And, ultimately will all the devices flow in sequence to create a complete cascading series of cause and effect. Once completed the first team sets off their Chain Reaction, which in turn triggers the next team's creation, and so on until a giant Chain Reaction has been completed around the room. Much like A Rube Goldberg machine intentionally designed to perform a simple task in an indirect and over-complicated fashion the final triggers a wondrously simple yet stupendously amazing final action.
Learning Outcomes
Chain Reaction emulates a real life project as teams are constrained by limited time and resources. Team dynamics and human resource management are put to the test in the planning phase as the design is divided into small segments, requiring both human and physical resources to be divided into smaller working groups. Drawing on problem solving, creativity and communication skills teams must work together effectively in the design phase to create a realistic scope. The build and testing phases require co-ordination not only between teams, but between distinct technical skills and project management strategies. Chain Reaction transforms thinking, motivates towards excellence and ensures everyone is engaged.
